A Christmas short break in York captures the magical atmosphere of that very special Christmas build-up.  The tiny medieval shopping streets, glistening windows, sparkling lights – offering a wonderful choice of gifts and presents – unusual items that you won’t find elsewhere. York’s annual Christmas Market  showcases the streets of Parliament Street and St Sampson’s Square buzzing with visitors and residents alike, all searching for that very special gift.

Here in Yorkshire, we’re proud of the goods that are made within the county and our Christmas market offers a huge range of festive foodstuffs – cheeses,  breads, cakes, biscuits, chocolates, wines, beers and spirits from farms and independent producers who understand the importance of quality products.

We have our favourites – far too many to mention them all, but Rose Cottage Pantry produce a wonderful range of pies and pastries, much loved in York and around East Yorkshire. Look out for Guppy’s Chocolate    We always put some in your Welcome Hamper, but you’ll find it in the local shops too. If street food is your thing, you’ll be spoilt for choice . There’s nothing better than wandering between market stalls with a beaker of mulled wine in one hand and  a mighty, spicy sausage sandwich in the other. The Shambles Kitchen   offers a huge range of exciting and tasty street food , guaranteed to please the hungriest of shoppers.

Craft beers and Yorkshire spirits are to be found too. Spirit of Yorkshire  with its signature Filey Bay whisky,  delicious Raisthorpe Manor fruit gins and liqueurs and the cleverly named  Sloemotion produced just north of the city.

There is such a wide variety of gifts quirky and unusual, luxury or budget.  Not many folk will have received a  Viking drinking horn, but the stall selling all things Viking might be the answer to your prayers! Handbags sweaters, berets, candles, lamps, handmade cosmetics – there’s a profusion of lovely items that will appeal to all ages and should suit every budget.

York is perfect for strolling and window shopping before you make your special buys.   York is small  and friendly, a city speckled with cosy cafes, ancient hostelries,  and whatever type of cuisine is your particular favourite.  It is steeped in history, heritage and culture and, in December, it is a vibrant place, full of fun and laughter. Why not come and see for yourself?
