York Ice Festival February 3rd -4th 2024
York’s Ice Trail is set to welcome thousands of visitors over the first weekend of February. Each year the festival has grown in popularity and is one of Visit York‘s most popular winter events.

Has Santa travelled specially for the Ice Festival?
Wrap up warmly and take to the winding medieval streets and snickleways of York to discover the most amazing creations, sculpted in ice.
For 2024 the theme will be City of Dreams -frosty, fantastical, ice carvings strategically sited within the city walls in the most unexpected places. As well as the ice sculptures, there will be opportunities for adults and children alike to have a go at ice carving- not quite the same as building a snow man, but just as chilly!
Remember the Ice Trail is free to visit and great fun for all the family.

Glistening ice angel at night
This year Icebox is the creative team responsible for the fantastic displays. You can read about their work by visiting their web pages. Their sculptors have worked all over Europe and created unimaginably complex works of art that are destined to last for the briefest of moments.

Children admire the icy statue
Tonnes of ice, in all their wonderful shapes and forms, will need to be transported into the city in readiness for the visitors and residents to admire the finished work on Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th. The ice artists will have worked diligently to ensure their beautiful ice creations will look their best for the delight of York‘s tourists and the people of this wonderful city.

This week -long festival is acknowledged to be one of the largest events of its kind in Europe and showcases sword fighting, historical encampments, Viking costume, talks, walks and all things Viking! Be prepared to encounter Norsemen, Norsewomen and their children in the most unexpected places! They certainly look quite scary, but they are really very friendly.
